There's organisations around the world dedicated to saving birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, insects, plants but did anyone every stop to think that these lines cross over? By saving fish we may just save some amphibians? Or by saving some plants we may indeed be saving some insects. Well, the answer is yes & that's exactly what Back from the Brink are about.
Connecting & bringing together conservation organisations from around England to help save 20 endangered species & benefit 200 more. In this episode I speak with communications & engagement manager at BftB, James Harding-Morris about what this amazing organisation is doing & what the next steps are.

Well, it seems like so long ago but here we are back at trying to get Ryan (me) Into Birding......*sigh*.....
Last time I spoke to Jack, Lucy & Indy about why they like birds & gave them the opportunity to 'take me under their wing' BUT THIS TIME I grabbed my binoculars, whacked my boots on & then walked to Hampstead Heath to go birding whilst talking to Jack, Indy & Lucy about what environments are best, how to listen to bird call & what to look out for among species!

The best thing about hosting this side series is the amount that Jan & I learn! Sometimes we just sit back after a show, have a chat & take in all the information. So, we decided for Episode 6 of Into The Foliage, we would record a simple chat with us both going over the last 5 months of episodes & what we have been doing in our own garden & plant loving life!

UK Gamekeeping & Hunting with Charlie Jacoby

Monday May 17, 2021
As many of you know, Into The Wild has discussed hunting on the show before & we have discussed bird crime in the UK. It may surprise you to know that I also sometimes get DM's calling me biased due to the guests I have on my show (LOL) SO because of that, I thought, heck, why not talk to a hunter too? So where we go, on this episode I speak with Charlie Jacoby from Fieldsports TV about Gamekeeping & Hunting in the UK.
I took this opportunity to ask Charlie some questions about this topic that either, I don't know about or that I may have a few issues with. From what needs to change in UK gamekeeping to help biodiversity, why burning heather is a thing & what Charlie believes needs to happen in order to put an end to UK bird crime. Not all the answers sat well with me, I challenged where I could & I listened, that's what I ask you to do too.
If you'd like to keep up to date with Charlie & his work, you can do so via the Fieldsports YouTube channel.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week & in the last 12 months, we have never been more aware & protective of our mental health. This year The Mental Health Foundation has selected Nature as their theme & boy do I understand the importance nature can hold in protecting my head!
On this bonus episode I talk with Bethan Buswell, Social Media Manager at the Mental Health Foundation about why the Mental Health Foundation chose ‘Nature’ as the theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week - why being around nature is good for your mental health, how connecting to nature can help prevent mental health problems and why everyone should have access to nature to achieve good mental health for all. We also chat about how important nature has been to people’s life during the pandemic all around the world.

"LET'S JUST GET THEM BACK IN THE WILD!" Sure, it's an easy sentence to say & definitely easy to believe but, how easy is it? This week I chat with with ecologist & naturalist Pete Cooper about how animals can go from enclosures, to the wild.
Pete goes into great detail of the reasons why we look at reintroductions of a species & what part that can play in the local ecosystems. I also ask Pete what animals he is most optimistic about making a comeback to the wilderness of the UK.

When we think of the youth fighting to save the planet, we think of the Greta's of the world. Starting & joining marches, creating petitions & talking with the decision makers, all very important stuff, but sometimes, the youth go at it a different way.
This week I spoke with Tom & Harvey. Two young, enthusiastic & inspiring conservationists that are running & creating a European reptile & amphibian captive breeding center, in order to release species back into the UK or to improve current populations.
I was blown away by the knowledge & maturity when talking to them both. I did also take the opportunity to ask them what they thought of the criticism their project got from some voices in the conservation world, safe to say I enjoyed their answer.

They are the most powerful, impressive & important things on this planet. We walk past them most days but how often do we appreciate them. Well in this episode of Into The Foliage, Jan & Ryan chat with author & tree expert Paul Wood about tremendous trees!
From what makes a tree a tree, why they are so important to what some of Paul's favourites are, this episode is all about the woody goodness of our carbon breathing friends. Paul also dives in to tell us about his passion for urban trees, from the history to the pure admiration of them & announces his new project, a book about the great urban trees of Britain & Ireland.

Let's Talk About Seaspiracy with Jaida Elcock & Marine Cusa
Monday Apr 19, 2021
Monday Apr 19, 2021
Well, everyone else is talking about it so I thought I would too!
Seaspiracy, a film that needed to be made but when it was, was it done right or were there missed opportunities & misinformed messages? I certainly felt like there was but I don't work with the ocean so I thought I should get some help. My guests this week to answer my questions about this FISHY documentary were science communicator & co-founder of MISS- Elasmo, Jaida Elcock & marine biologist who is working to prevent illegal fishing, Marine Cusa.
I was keen to ask Jaida & Marine what points of the film they thought were good & what points they felt were.....not so spot on. Jaida explains to us the importance of getting the communication right & why certain messages in the film may not be the right ones to be pushing, whilst Marine rights some of the wrongs regarding talks about some NGO's in the film.
There's lots to unpack on this episode but let me remind you this show is not here to change your mind on Seaspiracy. This episode is here to add to the research you are hopefully doing on the topic of sustainable fishing & marine conservation.
