Into The Foliage: Spontaneous Plants with Sophie Leguil
Monday Mar 15, 2021
Monday Mar 15, 2021
Every spring supermarket shelves are disgustingly packed with "weed killer" or "instant weed destroyer" or even "weed gone juice", but as we move with the environmental needs of this planet, isn't it time we embrace these weeds or "spontaneous plants" & use them to their full potential to not only help wildlife, but also help ourselves.
This week Jan & Ryan are joined by horticulturist, botanist & ecologist Sophie Leguil to discuss the world of weeds & how power these plants can be. From the benefits to the what NOT to do in your garden, Sophie opens the lid of the compost bin of plant knowledge to help us see the flower, among the weed.
If you'd like to keep up to date with the projects & work Sophie is working on, you can do so on Twitter @Sleguil / @morethanweeds or on Instagram @more_than_weeds.

Exploring Underwater with Jack Perks
Monday Mar 01, 2021
Monday Mar 01, 2021
Seeing life underwater isn't something we all get the pleasure of being able to do, yet for this week's Guest, underwater photographer & cameraman Jack Perks, it's just another day at the office.
How did Jack fall in love with life in rivers & ponds, what's the most annoying fish to try & film & how can we get more excited about this environment we rarely encounter. Jack tells me blue space, is just as important as green space.
Jack is also a fellow podcaster, running & hosting The Bearded Tit's Podcast, we briefly speak podcaster to podcaster about how the show came about & where he hopes it will go.

Birding, ergh, birding. There's more birders on the planets than there are birds, you know that right? WHAT IS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?! I've never understood the world of birds & after one joke tweet about our feathered friends last year, thousands of angry birders & many wind ups later, I decided to dip my toes in the pool of......birds.
I couldn't do it alone though. I needed help. So in this mini series titled, Getting Ryan Into Birding, I'll be talking with Jack Baddams, Indy Greene & Lucy Lapwing, as they take me under their wing (yes that's a pun) to teach me not only how, but why, I should get into birding.

Telling the Story with Nina Constable
Monday Feb 15, 2021
Monday Feb 15, 2021
There's two parts of nature, the absolute beautify & wonder, then there's the story. There's always a story to tell & ensuring that it's told is an important job. One person that knows that better than anyone is award winning documentary filmmaker, Nina Constable.
On this week's show I speak with Nina about how she even gets started on working on projects, what some of the most challenging moments she has encountered are & of course those classic Ryan questions of what some of Nina's favourite moments & projects have been.
I'd advise to grab a cup of coffee & tea & sit back to enjoy a chat with someone who has travelled the world as they tell you about the importance of telling the story of nature.
If you'd like to keep up to date with the projects & work the Nina is working on, you can do so on Instagram & Twitter @Ninaconstable & on Instagram @Ninaconstablemedia.

Into The Foliage: Plant Trade with Dr David Roberts
Monday Feb 08, 2021
Monday Feb 08, 2021
You know Jan loves a plant bargain & Ryan certainly isn't shy of a house plant or 12 but whenever we buy plants do we ever stop to think about all the work that goes behind managing the trade of plants to ensure nothing bad happens? We didn't, so we planned this chat with Dr David Roberts from the University of Kent to discuss the detailed world of plant trade.
From what makes a plant....illegal to what a plant passport is all about, David, in great detail, tells us all about the management of keeping things legit when it comes to trading plants.

Monday Feb 01, 2021
Monday Feb 01, 2021
Welcome to part 3 of our mini series about UK Bird Crime. After learning about raptor persecution, I decided to dive in deeper & learn as much as I could finishing up the series with a chat with a in the field ranger for the RSPB, Patrick.
I chat to Patrick about his experiences dealing with bird crime often face to face & what measures he & his team go to, to prevent & investigate incidents.
A slight warning for this show, we do talk about graphic scenarios involving animal abuse.

Wildlife Photography with Luke Massey
Monday Jan 25, 2021
Monday Jan 25, 2021
Over the last 12 months, we have all appreciated nature more & many of us have been documenting it, whether that be on a DSLR or the camera on our phones, but wildlife photography is so much more. I always wondered how people get fully into it. How does it become a job? What are the highs & what are the challenges?
On this episode I find out as I speak with award winning wildlife photographer Luke Massey.
From the story of how he got into wildlife photography, some of his experiences & even challenging the ethics involved with the job, this episode is packed with tips & bits of advice for any future photographers.
Luke finishes with telling us the story of Wild Finca. A project he & his partner have set up to agro-rewild a plot of land in North Spain.
Thanks again for listening. If you'd like to keep up to date with the projects & work Luke is working on, you can do so on Instagram & Twitter @LMasseyImages.

Winter Appreciation with Megan McCubbin
Monday Jan 18, 2021
Monday Jan 18, 2021
Ooof put that heating on & make me a brew IT'S WINTER! A time of year that many of us may shiver at or prefer to hibernate under the duvet with some snacks & a Netflix marathon, but, should we appreciate it more?
This week I spoke to zoologist & wildlife presenter Megan McCubbin as she gears up for the next installment of BBC's The Watches, with WinterWatch.
Megan dives into telling us what winter is all about for nature & why it really is a drastic time for wildlife & combining that with what we can look out for both out in the sticks & in cities. We also discuss The Watches themselves & talk about how different they've been in the last year with the many lockdowns we have faced.
Last but certainly not least, I ask Megan how a project of hers & her step dad's, the Self Isolating Bird Club, came to be.
