Into The Foliage: Plant Trade with Dr David Roberts
Monday Feb 08, 2021
Monday Feb 08, 2021
You know Jan loves a plant bargain & Ryan certainly isn't shy of a house plant or 12 but whenever we buy plants do we ever stop to think about all the work that goes behind managing the trade of plants to ensure nothing bad happens? We didn't, so we planned this chat with Dr David Roberts from the University of Kent to discuss the detailed world of plant trade.
From what makes a plant....illegal to what a plant passport is all about, David, in great detail, tells us all about the management of keeping things legit when it comes to trading plants.

Welcome to part 3 of our mini series about UK Bird Crime. After learning about raptor persecution, I decided to dive in deeper & learn as much as I could finishing up the series with a chat with a in the field ranger for the RSPB, Patrick.
I chat to Patrick about his experiences dealing with bird crime often face to face & what measures he & his team go to, to prevent & investigate incidents.
A slight warning for this show, we do talk about graphic scenarios involving animal abuse.

Wildlife Photography with Luke Massey
Monday Jan 25, 2021
Monday Jan 25, 2021
Over the last 12 months, we have all appreciated nature more & many of us have been documenting it, whether that be on a DSLR or the camera on our phones, but wildlife photography is so much more. I always wondered how people get fully into it. How does it become a job? What are the highs & what are the challenges?
On this episode I find out as I speak with award winning wildlife photographer Luke Massey.
From the story of how he got into wildlife photography, some of his experiences & even challenging the ethics involved with the job, this episode is packed with tips & bits of advice for any future photographers.
Luke finishes with telling us the story of Wild Finca. A project he & his partner have set up to agro-rewild a plot of land in North Spain.
Thanks again for listening. If you'd like to keep up to date with the projects & work Luke is working on, you can do so on Instagram & Twitter @LMasseyImages.

Winter Appreciation with Megan McCubbin
Monday Jan 18, 2021
Monday Jan 18, 2021
Ooof put that heating on & make me a brew IT'S WINTER! A time of year that many of us may shiver at or prefer to hibernate under the duvet with some snacks & a Netflix marathon, but, should we appreciate it more?
This week I spoke to zoologist & wildlife presenter Megan McCubbin as she gears up for the next installment of BBC's The Watches, with WinterWatch.
Megan dives into telling us what winter is all about for nature & why it really is a drastic time for wildlife & combining that with what we can look out for both out in the sticks & in cities. We also discuss The Watches themselves & talk about how different they've been in the last year with the many lockdowns we have faced.
Last but certainly not least, I ask Megan how a project of hers & her step dad's, the Self Isolating Bird Club, came to be.

We've seen them in food, in fairytales, in folklore, in documentaries & pretty much anywhere we go but still, do we know much about them. In this episode of Into The Foliage we speak with Fungi enthusiast, Ali McKernan, aka The FUNgi Guy.
I promise you will laugh throughout this episode as Ali takes us into the world of fungi from how he got hooked, the variety, the benefits & pretty much everything you'd ever want to you.
Ali has a wonderful YouTube channel you should check out with his own mini series called Mico-Heros. The link for his series is below:

Understanding Poaching with Gabi Fleury
Monday Jan 04, 2021
Monday Jan 04, 2021
Welcome to the 2021 series of Into The Wild & DAMN do we have, not only exciting episodes to bring to you this year, BUT a new section of Into The Wild that will be dropping in the very near future. I know, blooming exciting right?
HOOOOOOWEVER, right now we are here for today's episode & this week I spoke with carnivore biologist Gabi Fleury about the heavy & difficult topic of poaching. WOOOO 2021 LET'S TALK ABOUT DEATH!
Seriously though, I decided to put this episode first because it's what I believe this new year is in need of. Discussion & listening. Even when it's topics that make us uncomfortable. That's certainly what Into The Wild believes in. So that's what Gabi & I did. They told me all about their career working in field trying to solve predator & community conflict & the reasons why poaching even exists.
I also asked Gabi what their thoughts or feelings are when they read or hear of people suggesting, poachers should be killed.
Gabi says it clearly. Don't devalue human life. Accept that humans are part of a holistic ecosystem & the best way to help wildlife, if Gabi could change one thing? End poverty.
Disclaimer, we talk about poaching. Instruction, listen with an open mind.

Gillian Burke-Watch - A chat with Gillian Burke
Monday Dec 14, 2020

We all watch nature shows on TV....right? Surely you must & these shows always have a face, a voice, a person. Telling us the information we need to fully understand what we are seeing, but how hard is that? Being that person? Both behind & in front of the screen. Well, on today's show & the last episode of 2020, I talk to Spring & Autumn Watch presenter, biologist, voiceover artist, producer, newly appointed vice president of the wildlife trusts AND mother, Gillian Burke.
It was, as always, a pleasure to chat & to hear about Gillian's career & her memories of where it's taken her. Her message? Simple, be yourself & slow down. We talk about the pressure of a presenter, Gillian's favourite invertebrates, a close up with a grey seal, her new role at The Wildlife Trust & what she hopes for the future.

We all know what Corals are & we all know what they do but do we REALLY know? I certainly didn't, it turns out, but with the help of this week's guest, marine coral scientist & PhD student Rosie Steinberg, I now know so much more & approximately 40 minutes time, so will you.
We dived into the world of Corals learning how they develop, the relationships they have with other animals & organisms & the wonderful things they do that pretty much help the entire planet.
You'll definitely come away with a new found love & huge respect for these weird & delicate creatures.

Welcome to the first PROPER episode of Into The Foliage.
Embracing plants is not something we see enough of in mainstream media however this months guest on Into The Foliage certainly changes that. Author & botanist Leif Bersweden joins Jan & Ryan to chat about his love for the green side of nature & his fascination of orchids.
Leif tells us how he became an expert of UK wild plant identification, shares the story of his love for a certain oak tree & blows Jan & Ryan's mind when telling tales of life of orchids.

Snakes of the UK with Steve Allain
Monday Nov 23, 2020
Monday Nov 23, 2020
It still shocks people to learn that here in England, we have snakes, but we do & one person who loves this fact is PhD student who specialises in snakes & amphibians, Steve Allain.
The topic of snakes is a big one so we kept this more specific to UK species however of course I asked some of the general questions like, "are they all venomous?" & "how the heck do they move?" but on from that, Steve told us all about the different species we can find here in this temperate island & how the vary.
As always, we also discussed the current condition snakes are in & what is causing some declines. The usual suspects came up but at the end Steve highlights organisations to focus on in order to learn more about these reptilian beauties.
